Maths station: build and change a pattern

12 minutes

Children describe a repeating rule, continue it and explain one deliberate change.

What you use: two kinds of safe counters, two trays, one simple pattern card

What happens in this excerpt

  1. Set out one short two-part pattern and leave the next spaces empty.
  2. Invite two to four children to continue it together and say or show the rule.
  3. Change one item, ask what changed and let the group repair or redesign the pattern.
  4. Record one neutral observation about the strategy used, not a score.
Words you can use straight away
“What part keeps repeating?”
“How could you show the rule another way?”
Easier entry

Offer only two clearly different objects and repeat the first pair together.

Extension

Let the group invent a three-part rule and make a matching take-home example.

Safety: Use age-appropriate pieces that are not choking hazards and supervise the station continuously.
