Early maths does not need to arrive as a lesson. A table needs one cup for each person. Socks form pairs. Steps can be counted, and a repeating fence pattern can be noticed on a walk. These moments help children connect mathematical words with things they can see and change.
Keep the invitation short. Ask how the child knows, then make room for their idea. If the answer is different from yours, count or rearrange together instead of correcting quickly. The useful part is the shared reasoning.
